Exploration Day
Today we explored driving over the back roads up and down mountains to see more of this beautiful countryside. We started by jumping in our car and then hopping on to a short ferry ride across the fjord. The ferries are an important part of the travel in this area - one of the things we learned is they are almost all electric!
We then drove up and down switchbacks and through multiple mountain tunnels (some of the tunnels were 7 plus miles long) - our destination was the Norwegian Glacier Museum. The museum is very close to Jostedalsbreen Glacier National Park. We enjoyed the museum as well as had lunch at Bøyabreen Cafe which has been serving food to glacier explorers and tourists for more than a century.
Greg LOVES knots so of course, the chance to learn some new knots was one of his favorite things about the museum.
After lunch, we did some hiking to the glacier lake at the bottom of Bøyabreen Glacier. Of course, we are so thankful we have seen glaciers in our lifetime, but also recognize that many glaciers are disappearing. Here is the difference in the Bøyabreen Glacier in the last 60 years.
When we left the museum, we decided to take a long circuitous route back to our cabin which allowed us to further explore. We chose a Norwegian Nationalist Tourist Route - not a route that promises a quick trip, but does promise exceptional beauty. And our trip took even longer because I kept asking Greg to find the next pullout so I could snap another photo. Here are a few:
We got back to the cabin, made a sandwich for dinner, then walked down to the fjord for a couple of sunset photos. We were blessed with great weather today for all our exploring.
