Friluftsliv

The Norwegian concept "Friluftsliv" when broken down means "free" "air" "life." I remember first being captivated by this concept/word when I saw a beautiful display on Friluftsliv at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle. The word was first published in 1859 by Henrik Ibsen the playwright, but the essence of Friluftsliv has been in Norwegian Society for over 5000 years. Friluftsliv is a philosophy of outdoor life that encourages you to connect with nature for health and wholeness. If you are interested in learning more, here is an article about Friluftsliv. https://afroginthefjord.com/2020/11/14/how-the-concept-of-norwegian-friluftsliv-can-save-your-life/comment-page-1/?v=c2f3f489a005&amp

I realize that even as a young girl, I innately understood the concept of Friluftsliv as I fell in love with spending time at Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin. Fast forward to my adult life and all the National Park trips that Greg and I have taken to beautiful places like Glacier National Park. The outdoors is where I have also connected to God and my faith.

Now, as we turn the corner into this contentious fall, perhaps the Norwegian concept of Friluftsliv is more important for us than ever. For me, it means less time "doom scrolling" and more time getting out into nature where my soul can be refreshed and restored.
